You may also feel or hear the system working; this is normal. The traction control disable button is located on the instrument panel below the climate controls. Traction control limits wheel spin by reducing engine power to the wheels engine speed management and by applying brakes to each individual wheel brake-traction control as necessary.
The traction control system is enabled automatically when you start your vehicle. Power Steering If you lose power steering assist because the engine stops or the system is not functioning, you can steer but it will take much more effort. Steering Tips It is important to take curves at a reasonable speed. Page Steering In Emergencies Steering in Emergencies There are times when steering can be more effective than braking.
If the level of the shoulder is only slightly below the pavement, recovery should be fairly easy. Ease off the accelerator and then, if there is nothing in the way, steer so that your vehicle straddles the edge of the pavement. Page Skidding In a skid, a driver can lose control of the vehicle. A rock, log, hole, rut, or bump can startle you if you are not prepared for them. Often these obstacles are hidden by grass, bushes, snow, or even the rise and fall of the terrain itself.
Driving safely on hills requires good judgment and an understanding of what your vehicle can and cannot do. There are some hills that simply cannot be driven, no matter how well built the vehicle. Page Driving Uphill Driving Uphill Once you decide you can safely drive up the hill, you need to take some special steps. With the brake pedal pressed and the parking brake still applied, shift the transmission to PARK P and restart the engine.
Will I be able to maintain vehicle control? Hard-packed dirt? But if it happens when going downhill: 1. Stop your vehicle by applying the regular brakes. Apply the parking brake. Page Stalling On An Incline When driving across an incline that is not too steep, the vehicle can hit some loose gravel and start to slide downhill. If you feel your vehicle starting to slide sideways, turn downhill. This should help straighten out the vehicle and prevent the side slipping. Page Driving in Mud, Sand, Snow, or Ice When you drive in mud, snow, or sand, your wheels will not get good traction.
You cannot accelerate as quickly, turning is more difficult, and you will need longer braking distances. It is best to use a low gear when you are in mud — the deeper the mud, the lower the gear. Deep water can sweep your vehicle downstream and you and your passengers could drown. If it is only shallow water, it can still wash away the ground from under your tires, and you could lose traction and roll the vehicle over.
Page Driving At Night Driving at Night Night driving is more dangerous than day driving because some drivers are likely to be impaired — by alcohol or drugs, with night vision problems, or by fatigue. They might not work as well in a quick stop and could cause pulling to one side.
You could lose control of the vehicle. Windows clean — inside and outside? You would then have poor braking or even none going down a hill. You could crash. Shift down to let the engine assist the brakes on a steep downhill slope. But you can turn StabiliTrak off if you ever need to. Even with StabiliTrak down and adjust your driving to the road conditions.
Page You can run the engine to keep warm, but be careful. This can cause deadly CO carbon monoxide gas to get inside. CO could overcome you and kill you. You cannot see it or smell it, so you might not know it is in your vehicle. Start the engine again and repeat this only when you feel really uncomfortable from the cold. But do it as little as possible. Preserve the fuel as long as you can. To help keep warm, you can get out of the vehicle and do some fairly vigorous exercises every half hour or so until help comes.
Your vehicle could be damaged and it would not be covered by warranty. For vehicles with recovery hooks at the front of the vehicle, you can use them if you are stuck off-road and need to be pulled to some place where you can continue driving. The tire and loading information label shows the number of occupant seating positions A , and the maximum vehicle capacity weight B in kilograms and pounds. Page Determine the combined weight of luggage and cargo being loaded on the vehicle.
That weight may not safely exceed the available cargo and luggage load capacity calculated in Step 4. If your vehicle will be towing a trailer, the load from your trailer will be transferred to your vehicle. Page And, if you do have a heavy load, you should spread it out. If you do, parts on your vehicle can break, and it can change the way your vehicle handles. Try to spread the weight evenly. Page For example, adding a lb kg snow plow actually adds more than lbs kg to the front axle.
Some vehicles have restrictions on how far and how long they can tow. Turn the engine off, but leave the ignition on. Firmly set the parking brake. Securely attach the vehicle being towed to the tow vehicle. The repairs would not be covered by your warranty. Never tow your vehicle with the rear wheels on the ground.
Two-wheel-drive vehicles should not be towed with the rear wheels on the ground. Trailering means changes in acceleration, braking, handling, durability and fuel economy.
Successful, safe trailering takes correct equipment, and it has to be used properly. In it are many time-tested, important trailering tips and safety rules. The GCWR for your vehicle should not be exceeded. The effect of additional weight may reduce your trailering capacity more than the total of the additional weight.
Page The effect of tongue weight is about 1. Dividing the lbs kg by 1. Since tongue weight is usually at least 10 percent of total loaded trailer weight, you can expect that the largest trailer your vehicle can properly handle is 6, lbs 2 kg. Page Trailer Brakes If you use a step-bumper hitch, the bumper could be damaged in sharp turns. Make sure there is ample room when turning to avoid contact between the trailer and the bumper. If your vehicle has the 5. If you have trouble starting on E85, it could be because the E85 fuel is not properly formulated for your climate. If this happens, switching to gasoline or adding gasoline to the fuel tank can improve starting. To help avoid injuries to you and others, read and follow all the instructions on the pump island.
Turn off your engine when you are refueling. Do not smoke if you are near fuel or refueling your vehicle. Page To open the fuel door, push the rearward center edge inboard and release. The door will pop open. To remove the fuel cap, turn it slowly counterclockwise.
The fuel cap has a spring in it; if the cap is released too soon, it will spring back to the right. Keep hands, clothing, and tools away from any underhood electric fan. Then go to the front of the vehicle and locate the secondary hood release, near the center of the grille. Push the secondary hood release to the right. Lift the hood. When you open the hood on the 5. Page Engine Oil A. Coolant Surge Tank and Pressure Cap.
This section explains what kind of oil to use. The recommended oils with the starburst symbol that meet GM Standard GMM are all you need for good performance and engine protection. Page 3. Care should be taken to dislodge as little dirt as possible. Reinstall the cover and tighten the screws. Page Checking the Fluid Level Prepare your vehicle as follows: 1. Page Engine Fan Noise Engine Fan Noise If your vehicle has a clutched engine cooling fan, when the clutch is engaged, the fan spins faster to provide more air to cool the engine. In most everyday driving conditions, the fan is spinning slower and the clutch is not fully engaged.
Turn the key off and let the engine compartment cool down. Wipe the cap and the top of the reservoir clean. Unscrew the cap and wipe the dipstick with a clean rag. The message is displayed for 15 seconds at the start of each ignition cycle. See Engine Compartment Overview on page for the location of the reservoir. If it is not, have the brake hydraulic system checked to see if there is a leak. Disc brake pads have built-in wear indicators that make a high-pitched warning sound when the brake pads are worn and new pads are needed.

Keep hands, clothing and tools away from any underhood electric fan. People have been hurt doing this, and some have been blinded. Page 5. Check that the jumper cables do not have loose or missing insulation. If they do, you could get a shock. The vehicles could be damaged too. Before you connect the cables, here are some basic things you should know. Page Notice: If the jumper cables are connected or removed in the wrong order, electrical shorting may occur and damage the vehicle.
Always connect and remove the jumper cables in the correct order, making sure that the cables do not touch each other or other metal. Have it inspected and repaired. Page Four-Wheel Drive Series To get an accurate reading, the vehicle should be on a level surface.
See Recommended Fluids and Lubricants on page Headlamp Aiming The vehicle has a visual optical headlamp aiming system. The aim of the headlamps have been preset at the factory and should need no further adjustment.
The high-beam headlamps will be correctly aimed if the low-beam headlamps are aimed properly. To adjust the vertical aim: 1. Open the hood. See Hood Release on page for more information. Page 7. Locate the vertical headlamp aiming screws, which are under the hood near each headlamp assembly. Turn the vertical aiming screw until the headlamp beam is aimed to the horizontal tape line. Turn it clockwise or counterclockwise to raise or lower the angle of the beam.
You or others could be injured. Page To replace one of these bulbs: 1. Open the liftgate. See Power Liftgate on page for more information. Remove the two screws from the taillamp assembly. Pull the taillamp assembly rearward until the inner pins on the taillamp assembly are disengaged from the vehicle.
Remove the two screws holding each of the license plate lamps to the molding that is part of the liftgate. Twist and pull the license plate lamp forward through the molding opening. Turn the bulb socket counterclockwise and pull the bulb straight out of the socket. See Scheduled Maintenance on page Replacement blades come in different types and are removed in different ways.
To replace the wiper blade assembly: 1. Pull the windshield wiper arm connector away from the windshield. Lift the wiper blade assembly up and out of the park rest position. Pull the wiper blade assembly away from the backglass. The backglass wiper blade will not lock in a vertical position, so care should be used when pulling it away from the vehicle.

Push, pull, and then try to rotate or turn the tire. If it moves, tighten the cable. Use only radial-ply tires with the wheels on your vehicle. Page Different Size Tires And Wheels Different Size Tires and Wheels If you add wheels or tires that are a different size than your original equipment wheels and tires, this could affect the way your vehicle performs, including its braking, ride and handling characteristics, stability, and resistance to rollover.
For example, a tire graded would wear one and a half 1. Page Wheel Alignment And Tire Balance Wheel Alignment and Tire Balance The tires and wheels on your vehicle were aligned and balanced carefully at the factory to give you the longest tire life and best overall performance. Adjustments to wheel alignment and tire balancing will not be necessary on a regular basis.
However, if you notice unusual tire wear or your vehicle pulling to one side or the other, the alignment might need to be checked. It could affect the braking and handling of your vehicle, make your tires lose air and make you lose control. You could have a collision in which you or others could be injured. They can damage your vehicle because there is not enough clearance.
If air goes out of a tire, it is much more likely to leak out slowly. Remove the wing nut B used to retain the tool bag by turning it counterclockwise. Turn the knob A on the jack counterclockwise to release the jack and wheel blocks from the bracket. Remove the wheel blocks and the wheel block retainer by turning the wing nut C counterclockwise. Page Secondary Latch System Secondary Latch System Your vehicle has an underbody-mounted tire hoist assembly equipped with a secondary latch system. It is designed to stop the spare tire from suddenly falling off your vehicle. For the secondary latch to work, the spare must be installed with the valve stem pointing down. Loosen the cable by turning the wrench counterclockwise three or four turns.
Repeat this procedure at least two times. If the spare tire lowers to the ground, continue with Step 5 of Removing the Spare Tire and Tools on page Page 8. Attach the jack handle, extension, and wheel wrench to the jack and place it with the wheel blocks under the vehicle toward the front of the rear bumper.
