I don't feel your pain. I have not installed Vista and won't consider it until Service Pack 2 yes, that's a two or 2. Yes, I'm a computer nerd, but that doesn't always mean focusing on the newest stuff. When it comes to operating systems especially, my focus is on using computers to get work done hence this Defensive Computing blog. I'm late to the game, but happy to have the rest of the world debug the operating system for me. I've got other things to do. The operating system conversion topic is often framed wrong.

To borrow from John F. But what if the answer is yes? What if every software application you use will work on Vista and all your printers, cameras, PDAs and other assorted hardware are also supported? That still doesn't mean your next Windows computer should run Vista.

It only leads to the next questions:. These are not easy questions, but rather than making a logical decision, some people have moved to Vista out of fear. Among them was James Fallows, who writes for The Atlantic. So I'd rather start out with it installed, despite the inevitable bugs in early release, than later have to install Vista myself.

It will be a long time before anyone is forced to move off Windows XP. And when that time comes, the forcing is likely to be from your desire to run an application that works on Vista but not on XP. And the bugs are indeed inevitable. An external hard drive or USB flash drive is recommendable here. After finishing all the selections, go back to the Backup page and click Back up Now to start the backup operation at once. The USB drive will be erased during the bootable drive creation process, thus, make sure no important data is saved in it.

If you still want to create the Windows 10 bootable drive in Vista, please download a Windows 10 iso from the website and use a free iso burning tool like UNetbootin to burn the iso file to your USB flash drive.

Just choose the iso file and your USB drive to start burning. Now, it is time to install Windows 10 on your machine that is running Vista. Choose the edition of Windows 10 you want to install. Note that the edition should be the one that you bought the license key for. Choose Custom: Install Windows only advanced if you see the following window. Choose partition 0 on the hard drive usually drive 0 and click Delete to remove it.

Choose to install Windows 10 on the unallocated space. Click Next and then the installation process is starting. After finishing the installation, you should follow the instructions on the screen to complete your settings. After that, you can enjoy the new features of Windows 10 on your old machine. Now, all the operations on how to upgrade Vista to Windows 10 are described in this post. Just follow the guide to finish the Windows Vista upgrade now. If you like this post, you can also share it with more people on Twitter.

Click to tweet. After completing the update from Windows Vista to Windows 10, there are some things you should do. If yes, install them. Make sure your drivers are up-to-date. Just right-click the Windows button to choose Device Manager , right-click a device and choose Update driver.

Repeat the operations for any driver. To get this in XP you can download it from here :D. WindowBlinds is quite a good program to get the glass effect however for those who hate having any performance issues when multitasking I find that WindowBlinds has given problems in that area!

There's nothing wrong with windowblinds. Buy vista if you want it very good once you get used to it. However it might work for some We all have our opinions Shaunn!! I am running Vista Ultimate on my PC as well as XP SP2 on my Laptop and unfortunately most laptops don't perform very well with Vista compared to a dektop computer, so if you read my first post you would relise that I mentioned: " to get the best look out of XP for those who don't have Vista" and " The XP GUI has been a complete bore" then this post is for those who are looking for a new look and can't run Vista!

Why do people state they have really good hardware and believe that this cures software stability problems? Calm down guys. Stop insulting people saying that it's either stupid to buy Vista or that it can't be compared to put a Vista theme on XP.

It was great. When I migrated to Vista Ultimate, I only had to get used to the new arrangement of features in the Control Panel and some other interesting and useful features. There will still be millions of Microsoft customers who are not going to migrate to Vista for the next few years and these fun transformation packs that copy Vista's aesthetics are simply fun and interesting for the XP user.

Right you are! My point is that the hardware I have is more than capable and obviously has to be a software related issue! The whole point of this topic is to find more ways than one to get the best transformaton of XP on a not so Vista capable machine Buddy, he was joking around.
